How to spot quality cannabis flower
Quality flower gives itself away through four signals: look, smell, lab data and feel. Checking them helps at any price.
Look
Expect vibrant greens, sometimes with purple, orange or red depending on the cultivar. Buds should be dense without being rock-hard, and visibly frosted with trichomes — the tiny resin glands that hold most of the cannabinoids and terpenes.

Smell
A fresh jar should give off a clear, distinct aroma — gas, citrus, pine, sweet earth or whatever the cultivar is known for. Hay, ammonia or musty notes point to a problem with drying, curing or storage.
Lab data
Ohio dispensary flower is tested by state-licensed labs, and the label shows its THC and CBD content. A high THC number isn't the whole story — look at the terpenes listed too.
Feel
Properly cured flower is slightly sticky and springy, not wet and not crumbly. Bone-dry flower is past its prime; damp flower wasn't dried correctly.

How to choose flower for your goals
A few practical filters make the menu easier to navigate. They're starting points, not rules.
By type
Indica, sativa and hybrid labels are a loose guide to a strain's background. Everyone responds differently, so use them as a starting point and ask a budtender if you're unsure.
By THC range
Higher THC means more THC per gram, but it isn't the only thing that shapes your experience. Terpenes, other cannabinoids and your tolerance matter too. If you're new, start with lower THC and small amounts.
By terpene profile
Terpenes are where aroma and flavor live. If you like gas-forward flower, look for caryophyllene and myrcene; for citrus, look for limonene. Explore more in terpenes.
By format and budget
Ohio flower is sold in 2.83 g (a tenth of an ounce), 3.5 g (an eighth), 5.66 g (a fifth) and 14.15 g (a half ounce) packages. Full-size buds sit at the top of the range. Smalls, minis and popcorn buds are smaller nugs of the same cultivars at a lower price, and shake or ground flower is the value tier for rolling your own. Each package is tested for its own batch, so check the label.

What's the difference between indoor and outdoor cannabis flower?
Indoor flower is grown in climate-controlled rooms, which usually means denser buds, strong terpene retention and a higher price. Outdoor flower follows the natural season under the sun and is often more affordable, with more variation between harvests. Light-deprivation greenhouses sit in between. Most premium Ohio flower is grown indoors.
What are smalls and popcorn buds, and are they worth buying?
Smalls and popcorn buds are smaller nugs of the same cultivars sold as full-size flower, at a lower price. Each package is lab tested for its own batch, so check its label rather than assuming it matches the eighth. They're good value if you grind your flower anyway; the trade-off is looks.
How should I store cannabis flower to keep it fresh?
In an airtight glass jar, somewhere cool and dark. Heat, light and air dry flower out and fade its aroma. A two-way humidity pack in the jar helps hold moisture steady. Avoid plastic bags for anything longer than a day or two, and keep cannabis out of reach of children and pets.
Can I still buy THCA flower at gas stations or smoke shops in Ohio?
No. Since Senate Bill 56 took effect on March 20, 2026, THCA flower marketed as hemp can't be sold in Ohio outside a dispensary licensed by the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control. Dispensary flower is grown and tested under state rules and sold in child-resistant packaging.
Does a higher THC percentage mean a stronger experience?
Not necessarily. THC percentage tells you how much THC is in the flower, but terpenes, other cannabinoids, how much you use and your own tolerance all shape the experience. Read the full label, start low and go slow.
