Edibles vs. vapes: what's the difference?
Vapes and edibles are two of the most popular ways to buy cannabis in Ohio. One is inhaled, one is eaten — and that changes how fast you feel it, how long it lasts and how you should dose. Here's how they compare.
In this guide
How vapes work
A vape heats cannabis oil or ground flower enough to release cannabinoids and terpenes as vapor, without burning it. On Ohio dispensary menus you'll mostly see 510-thread cartridges, which screw onto a rechargeable battery, and all-in-one disposables with the battery built in. Dry-flower vaporizers heat ground flower instead of oil.

- Fast onset. Usually felt within a few minutes.
- Adjustable. You can take one small puff, wait, and decide whether to take another.
- Little lingering odor compared with smoking flower.
- Needs hardware. Cartridges need a compatible battery; disposables don't.

How edibles work
Edibles are foods and drinks infused with cannabis extract — gummies, chocolates, mints, chews and beverages. You digest them, and your liver processes the THC before it takes effect, which is why they take longer to kick in and tend to last longer.

- Slower onset. Typically 30 minutes to 2 hours.
- Longer lasting. Effects can last 6 hours or more.
- Pre-measured. The label lists THC per piece, so servings are consistent.
- No smoke or vapor and no hardware.

Edibles vs. vapes side by side
| Vapes | Edibles | |
|---|---|---|
| How you take it | Inhaled | Eaten or drunk |
| Typical onset | A few minutes | 30 minutes to 2 hours |
| Typical duration | A few hours | 6 hours or more |
| Dosing | Adjust puff by puff | Set milligrams per piece |
| Hardware | Battery or disposable | None |
| Odor | Light, short-lived | None |
Onset and duration vary with the product, the amount, what you've eaten and your own body. Treat these ranges as a guide, not a guarantee.

Using each one responsibly
Vapes
- Buy only lab-tested products from a licensed Ohio dispensary.
- Start with a small puff and wait a few minutes before taking more.
- Use a battery that fits your cartridge, and keep vapes away from extreme heat.
Edibles
- Start low: 2.5 to 5 mg of THC if you're new.
- Wait at least two hours before taking more — the most common mistake is redosing too soon.
- Avoid mixing edibles with alcohol.
- Keep edibles in their original child-resistant packaging, away from children, pets and regular snacks.
Order either online and pick up in store with Grab & Go. Bloom doesn't deliver. Adult-use customers must be 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID; see Ohio possession limits for how much you can buy.
Legal notice. This guide is for general information, not legal advice. Ohio's cannabis laws can change at any time. Check current rules with the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control or ask a qualified attorney. Bloom only sells products from cultivators and processors licensed by the state of Ohio.

Which kicks in faster, a vape or an edible?
A vape. Inhaled cannabis is usually felt within a few minutes. An edible is digested first, so it typically takes 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in, depending on what you ate, the product and your body.
Which lasts longer, a vape or an edible?
Edibles. Effects from a vape usually fade within a few hours. An edible's effects can last 6 hours or more, so plan your day around it.
How much THC should I start with in an edible?
If you're new to edibles, start with 2.5 to 5 mg of THC and wait at least two hours before taking more. Check the milligrams per piece on the label — many packages hold several servings.
Do edibles and vapes count toward Ohio's purchase limit?
Yes. At a licensed Ohio dispensary, the daily purchase limit caps non-flower products, including vapes and edibles, at 15,000 mg of total THC, alongside up to 2.5 ounces of flower. See our guide to Ohio possession limits for details.
Can I use a vape or edible in my car?
No. Ohio law doesn't allow using cannabis in a vehicle, for drivers or passengers, and driving impaired is illegal. Keep products closed and out of reach while driving.
