How Ohio's cannabis tax works
Three taxes apply to adult-use purchases in Ohio:
- 10% adult-use excise tax. Set by Ohio's cannabis law and collected at checkout. Medical purchases are exempt.
- 5.75% Ohio state sales tax. The statewide base rate, on both adult-use and medical purchases.
- County sales tax. Between 0.75% and 2.25% at Bloom's stores, depending on the county.

Senate Bill 56, in effect since March 20, 2026, kept the excise tax at 10%.

What medical patients pay
Registered medical patients are exempt from the 10% excise tax and pay only state and county sales tax — between 6.5% and 8% at Bloom's stores. For regular customers, that difference adds up. See the Ohio medical marijuana card guide to learn who qualifies.
Where the tax money goes
Under Senate Bill 56, 36% of excise tax revenue goes to the Host Community Cannabis Fund, which is shared with the cities and townships that host adult-use dispensaries. The rest of the excise tax, along with state sales tax revenue, goes to the state's general fund.

How much is the tax on cannabis in Ohio?
Adult-use cannabis carries a 10% excise tax plus state and county sales tax. At Bloom's Ohio stores, that adds up to between 16.5% and 18% depending on the county. Medical patients pay only sales tax.
Do medical patients pay the 10% excise tax?
No. Medical cannabis purchases are exempt from Ohio's 10% adult-use excise tax. Patients pay regular state and county sales tax only.
Why is the tax different at different Bloom stores?
Ohio's 5.75% state sales tax is the same everywhere, but each county adds its own rate. That's why the total is lower in Stark and Butler counties than in Franklin County.
