How to renew

Four steps to renew your card.

Renewal works a lot like your first registration, minus the fee. Start about a month before your card expires so there's no gap.

1

Book a renewal visit

See a physician with a certificate to recommend from the State Medical Board of Ohio. It can be your original physician or a new one, and telehealth is allowed.

2

Get the renewal recommendation

If the physician confirms you still have a qualifying condition, they submit your renewal recommendation to the state. You don't file it yourself.

3

Renew in the registry

Log in to the Ohio patient registry with the email and password from your first registration. Once the new recommendation is in, a renew option appears on your account.

Mark your expiration date

Your registration expires one year after it was issued, on the last day of that month. The date is on your card and in your registry account. The state emails a reminder about 45 days before, but the reminder doesn't renew anything — you still need a renewal recommendation from a certifying physician.

Renew in the 30-day window

Renewals can be submitted up to 30 days before your card expires. Booking the physician visit a few weeks ahead gives you time to fix anything the registry flags before your card runs out.

If your card already expired

An expired card can't be used to buy as a patient, and if you're 18 to 20 you can't buy at all until you're back on the registry. Ohio rules also require you to dispose of any medical cannabis you have within seven days of your registration expiring. To get back on, see a certifying physician for a new recommendation, then complete the renewal in the registry.

Renewal questions

Ohio medical card renewal questions.

How much does it cost to renew an Ohio medical card?

The state charges nothing to renew. You'll still need a renewal visit with a certifying physician, which typically costs $50 to $100 depending on the provider.

When should I start my renewal?

Book your physician visit a few weeks before your card expires. Renewals can be submitted up to 30 days before the expiration date, and the state emails a reminder about 45 days out. The expiration date is on your card and in your registry account.

Does the state renew my card automatically?

No. The reminder email doesn't renew anything. Your physician has to submit a renewal recommendation, and then you finish the renewal yourself by logging in to the registry.

What happens if my card expires?

An expired registration can't be used to buy as a patient. If you're under 21, that means you can't buy at all until you renew. Ohio rules also require patients to dispose of any medical cannabis within seven days of their registration expiring. Get a new recommendation from a certifying physician and complete the renewal in the registry to get back on.

Can I renew with a different physician?

Yes. Any physician with a certificate to recommend from the State Medical Board of Ohio can submit your renewal recommendation.

I forgot my registry login. What now?

Use the password reset on the Ohio patient registry login page. If you still can't get in, contact the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control, or ask a Bloom patient rep to walk you through it.

I registered as a minor and just turned 18. Do I need a new registration?

Patients who turn 18 while their registration is valid can apply for a new adult registration right away, or wait and switch over at their normal renewal.
