Getting a medical marijuana card in Ohio is a straightforward process, and for many people it still offers valuable benefits even with adult-use cannabis available. Here’s how it works and what to expect.

Who qualifies for a medical card in Ohio

Ohio allows medical cannabis for patients with qualifying conditions such as chronic pain, PTSD, multiple sclerosis, cancer, epilepsy, Crohn’s disease, and several others. A state-certified physician must confirm eligibility.

Step 1: Schedule a visit with a certified physician

You’ll need an appointment with an Ohio-licensed doctor who is approved to recommend medical cannabis. Many clinics offer both in-person and telehealth visits.

Step 2: Receive your recommendation

If approved, the physician submits your recommendation directly to the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program.

Step 3: Register with the state

You’ll receive an email to complete your patient registration online. This includes verifying your information and paying the state registration fee.

Step 4: Visit a licensed dispensary

Once your card is active, you can shop at licensed dispensaries like Bloom using your patient ID and a valid government-issued ID.

Benefits of having a medical card

Medical patients in Ohio often receive:

  • Lower taxes on purchases
  • Higher purchase limits
  • Access to certain medical-only products
  • Priority service at some locations

For frequent cannabis users or those treating ongoing conditions, the savings alone can make the card worthwhile. See how the tax difference adds up in our guide to marijuana taxes in Ohio, or visit our Ohio medical marijuana card page.
