Edible Dosing for New Users and Experts

How much THC should you take in an edible? A dosage scale from 1mg microdoses up, what each level feels like, what changes your dose and how to avoid taking too much.

The most common edibles mistake is taking too much. Not because people are reckless, but because edibles are genuinely confusing: they take much longer to kick in than smoking, can feel stronger when they do, and last longer than people expect. This guide gives you dose ranges, what to expect at each level and the rules that keep an edible experience pleasant.

The Most Important Rule: Start Low, Go Slow

Everything else in this guide comes second to this rule. Start with the lowest dose that could reasonably do something, wait at least 2 hours, and only then think about whether you want more. If you want to adjust, do it on another day, not in the same session.

Here’s why: edibles can take up to 2 hours to kick in, and when they do, your liver has turned THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a compound that’s often stronger and longer-lasting than the THC from smoking.1 That combination of a slow start and a long, strong finish is what catches people off guard.

How Long Edibles Take to Kick In

When you smoke or vape, THC is absorbed through your lungs and you feel it within minutes. With edibles, THC is processed by your liver first. Depending on the product, your metabolism, what you’ve eaten and your tolerance, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to feel the effects, and they typically last 4–8 hours. See how long a cannabis high lasts.

The Edibles Dosage Scale

Everyone responds differently, so treat these ranges as a general guide, not a promise.

1–2.5mg THC: Microdose

The lightest dose. Many people feel something subtle, like a slight mood shift, without feeling noticeably impaired.

  • Good for: first-timers and people who want very mild effects.
  • Feels like: slight relaxation, “I feel a little something.”

See our guide to microdosing cannabis.

2.5–5mg THC: Low Dose

The standard starting dose for most newcomers. Noticeable effects without being overwhelming.

  • Good for: beginners and casual use.
  • Feels like: relaxation, mild euphoria, slightly altered perception, music sounds better.

5–10mg THC: Standard Dose

The serving size on many edible packages. A clear high for most casual users, and possibly too much for brand-new consumers.

  • Good for: casual to regular consumers.
  • Feels like: clear euphoria, body relaxation, the munchies, an altered sense of time.

10–20mg THC: Moderate Dose

Strong enough to impair coordination and judgment for most people.

  • Good for: regular consumers with a built-up tolerance.
  • Feels like: strong euphoria and deep relaxation. New users may find it overwhelming.

20mg and Up: High Dose

For experienced consumers with significant tolerance only. Can bring strong psychoactive and body effects, and for inexperienced users, real discomfort or anxiety. Doses of 50mg and above aren’t appropriate for casual use.

What Changes Your Ideal Dose

Your Metabolism

Fast metabolizers may feel an edible in 30–60 minutes; slow metabolizers may wait up to 2 hours. Metabolism affects how long it lasts, too.

Food in Your Stomach

On an empty stomach, edibles tend to hit faster and sharper. After a meal, they come on slower and smoother. See what to eat to make edibles hit harder.

Your Tolerance

Regular smokers are often surprised by how low their edible tolerance is, because eating and smoking cannabis produce different compounds in the body. Even daily smokers should start low with their first edible.

Your Body Weight

A rough factor at best. Individual differences matter more than pounds.

Other Medications

THC and CBD are processed by liver enzymes that also handle many prescription drugs. If you take medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

CBD Content

Edibles with a balanced THC:CBD ratio, like 1:1, often feel less intense than THC-only edibles at the same THC dose. See CBD vs. THC.

A Common Mistake

Someone takes an edible, waits 20–30 minutes, feels nothing and takes another. Shortly after, the first dose kicks in, and then the second one arrives on top of it. Effects that would have been pleasant become too intense, and they can last for hours. Read up on the five mistakes first-timers make with edibles.

Tips for Getting It Right

  1. Look for low-dose products. Some edibles come in 1–2.5mg servings, which are ideal for finding your dose.
  2. Cut larger doses. If you only have 10mg pieces, cut them in half or quarters.
  3. Plan your timing. Allow about 45 minutes to 2 hours before you want to feel it, and remember that a 10mg edible at 9pm can still be noticeable at 3am.
  4. Don’t take an edible before driving or before anything important. Impairment can last 4–8 hours or longer.
  5. Store edibles safely. Gummies, candies and chocolates look like treats to kids and pets, so keep them locked up in child-resistant packaging. See our safe storage tips.

What to Do If You Take Too Much

Stay calm. Taking too much is unpleasant, but the effects will pass. Don’t drive. Find a comfortable place, drink water, eat something light and wait it out. CBD may take the edge off, and some people find that smelling or chewing a couple of black peppercorns helps. For the full guide, see how to sober up from weed. If symptoms go beyond feeling uncomfortable, like chest pain, trouble breathing or fainting, get medical help.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much THC should a first-timer take?

2.5mg is the safest starting point. 5mg is reasonable for most adults but more noticeable. Don’t go above 5mg your first time, however experienced you are with smoking.

How long should I wait before taking more?

At least 2 hours, and ideally until another day. Taking more at the 30–60 minute mark is the most common way to ruin an edible experience.

Can I use edibles every day?

Many people do, but regular use builds tolerance, so the same dose starts to feel weaker. A tolerance break can help.

Why didn’t my edible work?

You may not have waited long enough, the dose may have been too low for you, or your body may process THC faster than average. Try again on a different day with a slightly higher dose.

Are 10mg gummies strong?

For a new or casual user, yes. For an experienced daily consumer, often not. 10mg is a common serving size, not a universal dose.

Can I take a second edible halfway through?

Don’t. The first dose is probably still building. If it truly isn’t working after 2 hours or more, wait until another day to try a bit more.

The Bottom Line

Dosing edibles is simple when you respect the rules: start low, wait 2 hours and never stack doses in the same session. Roughly 2.5mg for first-timers, around 5mg for beginners, and higher doses only for experienced consumers.
